Poole Harbour is a busy commercial port with many different types of vessels sailing in and out of it daily. The harbour is also one of the world's largest natural harbours with much wildlife visible in the marshes and mudflats, as well as on Brownsea island inside the harbour. There is also a pontoon ferry crossing the harbour mouth back and forward all day, allowing easy access to the Purbecks.
Facilities at the terminal include a summer café for meals and refreshments, a bureau de change and a left luggage locker facility. The town of Poole is well-connected to other parts of Britain by motorways and public transport.
A car park is situated opposite the terminal. Both long- and short-term parking are available.

The Port of Poole is run by the Poole Harbour Commissioners. Cross-channel crossings are provided by Brittany Ferries, with two daily sailings to Cherbourg in France. The journey takes about 4 hours, 15 minutes. There is also a fast ferry available from May to September which makes the crossing in just over two hours. Condor Ferries has a route to St Malo in France, with a journey time of approximately 4 hours, 30 minutes. This runs from May to September. Condor Ferries also operates twice-daily services to St Peter Port in Guernsey, which take 2 hours, 30 minutes and to St Helier in Jersey in 3 hours. These two routes operate from April to October.
